Your period is a bellwether of your overall health.  Yep, every month we’re given a report card full of information on how our endocrine and reproductive systems are functioning.  Painful periods, heavy periods, irregular periods, no periods at all?   As the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) put it in 2015, our menstrual cycles are our fifth vital sign.  Wow!  This statement is poetic and provocative.  It likens our periods to other vital signs, like blood pressure, that are essential in telling us about our health status.  ACOG is reminding us that having periods and understanding our periods are really important!  So what is your period telling you?
